Understanding Virtual Power Plants

What is a Virtual Power Plant?

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a collection of energy resources in customer homes (e.g. batteries, electric vehicles, thermostats) that are grouped together using software, and then controlled in unison to deliver energy to the grid like a traditional power station. The grid then pays customers for this energy.

Can I participate in a VPP with Lunar?

Yes, Lunar has experience delivering VPP services in multiple markets around the world, and is excited to offer eligible Lunar customers the ability to sign up for VPPs. If you are eligible, the VPP feature will be visible in the Lunar App. If you have any questions, you can contact your installer or vppsupport@lunarenergy.com.

Why are VPPs important?

With more renewable energy being connected to the grid, balancing electrical supply and demand is critical. One way to do this is by turning on more gas or coal generators at times of high demand. Alternatively, with VPPs, consumers can band together and help balance the grid when it needs it most, helping to prevent blackouts.

Why should I participate in a VPP?

You’ll get paid, and you’ll be helping to make the grid greener and more reliable.

How do I participate?

You can sign up in the Lunar App if you’re eligible for a VPP program in your area that Lunar supports.

Can anyone participate in a VPP?

Unfortunately, not yet. VPP programs are only available in certain areas, and require certain hardware. With a Lunar System, you could be eligible if there’s a program in your area that Lunar supports, and we’ll notify you when that’s the case.

How does participating in a VPP affect my Lunar System’s day-to-day operation?

This will depend on the specific VPP program, but your battery will continue to charge from solar and then discharge that energy later. VPPs will mainly affect when that discharge happens. Some VPP programs have frequent “events,” while others may only have one event per month.

Can I set my battery reserve?

Yes, you will be able to manage your battery reserve (according to the rules of the relevant program).

Will there be an impact on my utility bill?

This will depend on the specific VPP program. Lunar will only recommend programs that we think will benefit you. Your bill could increase, but it should be offset by the value of VPP participation.

Will I still have protection from grid outages?

You will still be able to set your battery reserve to a level that makes you comfortable, in case of unexpected outages. However, a higher battery reserve will usually mean lower earnings from the VPP program.

Can I opt out of VPP events?

This depends on the program, but usually you can. You can opt out in the Lunar App. Please see the details of the relevant program for more information.

Can I unenroll from VPP programs?

Yes, you can do this in the Lunar App. Please see the details of the relevant program for more information.

How do I understand my Lunar System’s participation in a VPP?

The Lunar App will keep you up to speed on upcoming events, live events, and key information about past events.
